Experience

Hello, and thank you for visiting my profile! I'm a native English speaker from Vancouver, Canada and I've been teaching English in Russia for the past three years. Before coming to Russia, I completed my Masters (M.A.) degree in Human Geography at the University of British Columbia, and my Bachelors (B.A., Hons.) at Simon Fraser University. My research for my degrees was centred around understanding how networks of people, businesses, levels of government, and historical factors contributed to the development of the Port of Prince Rupert, which is located on the north coast of British Columbia, near Alaska. My English teaching work is guided by the "Communicative Approach", whereby students' speaking fluency is given top priority. During a usual lesson, the student and I decide on a topic to discuss, and we speak about it. As we speak, I make note of the student's mistakes in grammar, vocabulary, or pronunciation, and we address these at the end of the lesson. Finally, I assign the student homework that corrects and clarifies difficult aspects of grammar, deepens the student's understanding of vocabulary related to our discussion topic, and gives the student a chance to practice reading, writing and listening skills.

Hobbies

On a personal note, you might be wondering why yours truly, a geographer from Canada, happens to be teaching English in Russia. Well, Russia has always been an interesting country for me and I wanted to learn more about it, to really understand it. Instead of flying in as a tourist, taking pictures, eating tasty food and leaving, I decided to find work that lets me live here as a local, and meet and make friends with a wide variety of people here. Teaching English works very well to achieve that goal. When I have some free time, I enjoy travelling (particularly around the Caucasus region), studying the Russian language, reading, cross-country skiing, and amateur radio communications.
